Blue Lips (Cyanosis): There’s a Solution!

Blue Lips! Every permanent makeup artist has probably faced this problem. For women, it’s simply a disaster! For a PMU artist, it’s a complex, step-by-step process.

What can be done? How can it be fixed? Why does the blue color sometimes return during the healing of permanent makeup? How should corrections be done, and what do peaches and apricots have to do with it? We’ll explain everything now 👌🏻

From a medical perspective, there are many reasons why lips can turn blue, but they all come down to a lack of oxygen in the blood. Oxygen levels can be low due to a deficiency in the air, illnesses, improper functioning of the respiratory organs, or slowed blood circulation, which reduces oxygen supply.

Blood deprived of oxygen takes on a darker color, and it is this blood that gives the lips a blue tint instead of the usual pink or reddish hue. A doctor can explain in more detail what specifically caused this change in each individual case.

From an aesthetic point of view, permanent makeup can be recommended. However, if the artist does not fully master color theory, mistakes are inevitable, and the unwanted cool tone can return within just a couple of weeks.

How a Permanent Makeup Artist Should Work with Cold Lips in Blue, Light Blue, or White-Blue Shades

During the first procedure, it is necessary to work on the lips using a warm pigment in a peach or apricot shade. In the FACE palette these pigments are called APRICOT and TOFFEE.

You can also create a custom mix if a ready-made pigment is not available.

Use the most nude shade with the highest titanium dioxide content. In our FACE palette, this shade is called SCHERBET.

Add the most orange pigment available in your palette to the opaque pigment. Depending on the complexity and intensity of the blue tones, apply the pigment densely—not deep, but with a firm, even stroke. Then wait for the correction session.

During the correction, evaluate the results. If the first procedure was done correctly, the lips will take on a more vibrant shade, and the color will even out. At this stage, you can decide on the desired final color and work using a technique that is convenient and suitable for the client.
